Welcome to the Red Lion Youth Wrestling program. The program is designed to be an informative, and fun experience for the youth who are interested in learning about the sport of scholastic wrestling. We, the coaches of this sport, feel it is the best sport in the world. You have the ability to be as good as you want, as long as you are willing to do the work. You will have no one out on the mat with you when you wrestle the matches, which leaves no room for excuses or blaming of others for your accomplishments and failures. The sport teaches you to be responsible for your own actions, self discipline, and self control in different types of situations. We feel these are all very valuable lessons to be learned, that may be applied to everyday situations throughout the rest of your life.
The Red Lion Youth Wrestling program is open to all 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. The younger you begin this sport, the more instinctive the moves become as you gain experience. We will offer two (2) practices a week during December, January and February. In order to offer a competitive program we participate in the York County Youth Wrestling League. We are also part of the Red Lion wrestling booster club. We share in raising funds for the booster club through registration fee's, concession sales and fundraisers. We in turn receive funding from the boosters when needed. Therefore, parental support is a must if Red Lion wrestling is to be successful.
The York County Youth Wrestling League is a combination of Schools, Boys Clubs, and Community Recreation Associations that offer Youth Wrestling. The League will offer four controlled scrimmages attended by three teams per scrimmage. Your coaches will spend the entire Friday evening prior to the scrimmage setting up matches according to weight, age, and ability for all attending wrestlers. Therfore, it is imperative we know who will be attending the scrimmage prior to Friday meetings. The League also offers a League tournament at the conclusion of the season. This tournament is open only to members of the league. Trophies are awarded to the top four wrestlers in all divisions and weight classes.
We are not able to provide transportation to and from scrimmages or open tournaments. Therefore, we hope that you can take your son to the scrimmages or possibly car-pool with coaches or other families. Let the coaches know if you have an impossible situation or emergency. We will provide maps to the schools or you can check out the High School Maps Web site Click here.
We only practice two (2) days a week so please try to make it to practice. It is very important to condition the body to be ready to wrestle as well as learn the nessesary skills. We recommend doing some push-ups and running for conditioning at home as well as practicing the moves you learned. Two days a week is just not enough to fully develope in the sport of wrestling.
The leaque has no requirement as far as what equipment to wear. Shorts, t-shirts and sneakers are fine for practice with sweat gear over top for warmth before and after practice. Please try to keep fingernail length to a minimum and no belts, no watches, earrings or other jewelry. We will provide wrestling uniforms called singlets for scrimmages. Other equipment like head gear, knee pads, wrestling shoes and warm-ups are optional. We usually put orders in for warm-ups and sweat shirts at your expense, this is also optional.
